Please be reminded that our main office does not provide water or cups unless it is an emergency. Although, our drinking fountains are all turned off throughout the building, we do have several functioning water filling stations available for your students to get water from. They need to bring a water bottle to school with them each day or a small six pack of bottled water each week. Remember, water is available for purchase during lunch periods in the school store and the vending machines.
SPOTLIGHT ON INSTRUCTION
Special Guest Teacher: Julie Reese
Mrs. Reese’s AP Literature students are currently studying Victorian era literature and are reading Oscar Wilde’s satirical play, The Importance of Being Earnest. As the point of the play is to address social customs (and often the absurdity of those customs), the students learned about calling cards, afternoon tea, the language of flowers, and the importance of courting/marriage expectations. Today, we celebrated together by having our own tea party (complete with cucumber sandwiches!) and shared our calling cards as we began Act II.

Do you know about Juneteenth?
It is an important day in history.
June 19th marks the day that in 1865 federal troops arrived to ensure that every enslaved person has been freed. It came a full 2 years and a half after the Emancipation Proclamation. It has then been celebrated every year since. Juneteenth is considered the official end of slavery in the United States. U.S. General Gordon Granger stood on Texas soil and read General Orders No. 3: “The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free.”
Our US History is so rich with information, however, we can’t forget the sad part of our history that enslaved a people based on the color of their skin. Juneteenth is a day of celebration of liberation and freedom and that too is part of history.

NOTES FROM KIM KELLY - PTSA President
Hello Highlanders!!
Thank you to everyone who provided time and materials for our Valentine’s Day show of love. Handing out free candy and hot chocolate to students is so much fun that we will be making it an annual event. Your students are so kind, thoughtful, well-mannered and funny that it is a joy to put smiles on their faces. Our staff was treated to chocolate fountains and desserts and love was in the air at Adams!
Attention parents of Juniors – if you are interested in learning more about the Senior all night party by shadowing this years’ chairs, please contact Jen Wood at [email protected]. This amazing event takes many hands to put together and this will be an opportunity for next year’s interested party planners to get all the information they need.
Enjoy the short break with your families and, as always, thank you for your support!

COVID-19 PROTOCOLS
Dear RCS Families,
We are encouraged by reports indicating a decline in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations across the state. With an increase in vaccine, testing, and treatment access, we remain hopeful that progress will continue.
The following information reflects updated guidance and COVID-19 mitigation protocols from our local health experts.
Beginning on Monday, Feb. 28, 2022, masks will be optional in Oakland County schools and daycares. The Oakland County Health Division (OCHD) rescinded the Emergency Order (2021-01) for Control of Pandemic, which obligated educational institutions to require students, teachers, and staff to wear a face covering to slow the transmission of COVID-19.
It’s important to note that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) still requires masks on school bus transportation at this time.
Earlier today, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) also updated its mask guidance for public settings, to include schools. It is recommended that parents and caregivers assess risk factors within their own families when making personal choices about wearing a mask. The MDHHS states that those with chronic illnesses or who are immunocompromised could benefit from masking indoors.
We continue to reinforce that at no time will students or staff be discriminated against for their vaccination or mask-wearing preferences. RCS abides by a respect code that ensures all members of our community will be safe, valued, and respected.
The CDC, MDHHS, and the OCHD continue to support layered mitigation strategies to prevent the spread of illness, which can include masks, vaccinations, testing if exposed or symptomatic, frequent hand washing, and staying home when sick.
With the updated guidance, schools are not required to contact trace for COVID-19. For questions regarding the OCHD school quarantine and isolation guidance, families can contact the OCHD Nurse on Call at 800-848-5533.
Rochester Community Schools is participating in the MI Backpack Home Tests program, a voluntary at-home COVID-19 pilot testing program offered by MDHHS for K-12 settings.
Parents who opt into the program will receive one test “kit,” which includes two at-home tests. MDHHS will provide the kits and educational materials, and schools will distribute the kits to students and staff who choose to enroll. There is no obligation to participate.
Parents and caregivers who wish to have their student participate in the MI Backpack Home Tests program must complete the online form. Additional details will be provided as soon as the information becomes available.
The MDHHS does not recommend testing for those who have recovered from confirmed COVID-19 in the past three months and remain symptom-free. Any student or staff member who has symptoms of COVID-19 should still isolate at home.
Thank you for your continued support as we adjust to the updated COVID-19 guidance and protocols.
Sincerely,
Dr. Robert Shaner
Superintendent
*In the event that a student forgets their mask at home, staff members will offer the student a face covering.*

2022-2023 SCHEDULING MEETINGS
Hello Adams Families!
Please see below for the dates when your student will be meeting with counselors regarding the scheduling process (choosing classes for next school year). We will be presenting to students in their English classrooms to pass out scheduling cards and discuss how to fill them out. Once students and families have completed their cards, they should turn them in to their English teachers. In addition, students are required to input their course requests into StudentVUE before they submit their cards to their teachers. For the final step of the process, Counselor Review, students will come down to the counseling office to meet with their counselor individually to go over their course requests together and ask any questions they may have.
All scheduling materials including our PowerPoint, with the exception of the scheduling card, can be found on Google Classroom. There is also a short video posted on Google Classroom explaining how to enter the courses into Synergy through StudentVue.
