SOCIAL JUSTICE CLUB
CELEBRATING BLACK HISTORY MONTH!
Rochester Community Schools remains proud of our students who seek opportunities to contribute to a diverse, interdependent and changing world. This past year, high school students from across the district formed a student-led club called the Black Student Union. In celebration of Black History Month, one of the Black Student Union’s first projects included filming a four-part video series that highlights students, staff and community members as they share their reflections about Black culture and experiences. Each week during the month of February, we will be sharing one video from the series.

As we close the month of February, we want to honor several more African Americans that contributed to American History and they are:
Dr. Patricia Bath - African American Ophthalmologist, humanitarian, inventor, and laser scientist. Dr. Bath is the inventor of the laser cataract surgery known as "Laserphaco." Dr. Bath was an innovative research scientist and advocate for blindness prevention, treatment, and cure.
Dr. Rebecca Crumpler - challenged the prejudice that prevented African Americans from pursuing careers in medicine. Dr. Crumpler became the first African American woman in the United States to earn an M.D. degree. Dr. Crumpler was the author of "A Book of Medical Discourses."
Dr. Charles Drew - African American physician & surgeon. Dr. Drew (a.k.a. "Father of Blood Banking) developed the means to collect, distribute, and preserve blood plasma for transfusion. Dr. Drew saved countless lives in the trenches of World War II and the wards of military and civilian hospitals.
Katherine Johnson - a mathematician whose calculations of orbital mechanics at NASA were critical to spaceflights.
Dr. Vivien Thomas - In an era when institutional racism was the norm, Thomas was classified, and paid, as a janitor, despite the fact that he was a master of complex surgical techniques and research methodology. During the 1930s, this work later evolved into research on Crush syndrome and saved the lives of thousands of soldiers on the battlefields of World War II. Also, Dr. Thomas developed & supervised the procedure used to cure the blue baby syndrome (a.k.a. Tetralogy of Fallot) in the 1940s.
Dr. Jane C. Wright - was a pioneering cancer researcher and surgeon noted for her contributions to chemotherapy. Dr. Wright developed a technique of using human tissue culture rather than lab mice to test the effects of potential drugs on cancer cells.

SHERIFF MIKE BOUCHARD UPDATES!
Oakland County Sheriff, Mike Bouchard, is asking all Oakland County school districts to show the attached school safety video to all students.
The content in the video link below covers two important areas:
1)If you see something, say something – Asking all students to report anything that makes them uncomfortable, scared or unsafe.
2)Inappropriate messages (verbal, written or social media) will be investigated and prosecuted – Reminding all students to be mindful of what they say and post. Inappropriate messages that scare people are against the law.
