HAPPY BLACK HISTORY MONTH!
In February 1926, historian and author Dr. Carter G. Woodson created Black History Week. It was a weeklong celebration in an effort to teach people about African-American history and the contributions of Black people. This effort was made under the umbrella of an organization he founded in September 1915 called the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, or ASALH.
After he passed away in 1950, the members of the Omega Psi Phi fraternity, which Dr. Woodson was a member of, did a lot of groundwork to encourage celebrating the week. The fraternity was also responsible for the push to extend the celebrations to a full month. Eventually, in 1976, President Gerald Ford became the first president to issue a message recognizing the month.
Since then, presidents have made annual proclamations for National Black History Month, a tradition that President Donald Trump plans to continue, according to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.
Beginning Feb. 1, schools, museums and communities across the nation will mark the start of Black History Month — a celebration of Black history, culture and education. The history of the month dates back almost a century, and the way it is celebrated and evolved has created history in itself.

ADAMBOTS'
WEEK 1 - COMPETITON UPDATES!
Getting Robot Ready
Many mentors and students spent long hours on Sunday - Thursday getting the robot ready for the competition. All the hard work is appreciated. We loaded the van on Thursday at 6:30 PM, giving them more time for changes, and left Kettering on Thursday at 10PM, after a successful inspection.
Kettering FIRST in Michigan (FIM) District 1 Results
We had a rough start at the competition, first with a match start delay of two hours on Friday due to connection issues with the New Hampshire headquarters. Once the matches started, we had our first lesson in that a Corral dropped in autonomous landed in our robot, which means we could no longer score without a penalty. We did score some Algae, but not enough to win the match. And it happened again and eventually made changes to try to reduce or eliminate this from happening. The long delay in started meant we stayed an hour longer on Friday, so it was a very long day for the 24 students and the many mentors.
Saturday went much better for us in our qualification rounds and we finished in 24th place (moving up from 40th earlier). During the alliance selection, we were selected by the number five alliance captain and eventually formed the alliance of FRC Team 573, the Mech Warriors from Bloomfield and FRC Team 7491, the Cyber Soldiers from Burton). During our first playoff match, we again had a corral stuck in the robot, but mostly due to a bump by a defensive robot while we were loading. We lost a close match and moved to the lower bracket. We won our next match with a great score. We lost the last match when a corral was stuck in our partner's robot. We scored really well but our alliance had 12 points in penalties (only lost by 11). We had 77 or our 85 students attend on Saturday and our sea of yellow was very evident.
We did earn the Engineering Inspiration Award and here is the script read by the Master of Ceremonies.
The Engineering Inspiration Award celebrates outstanding success in advancing respect and appreciation for engineering within a team’s school or organization, and community. Inspiring others to respect science and technology requires passion, knowledge and commitment, and we recognize these qualities through this award.
This flock is involved in the community with Diversity, Equity and Inclusion letting all the water roll off their backs. This team likes to keep their ducks in a row by maintaining a good team structure They are able to grow their team through their pipeline which makes them a great leader in Engineering Inspiration.
Congratulations Team 245!
We are qualified to compete for this award at the State Championship, but it does not automatically qualify us to bring the robot. They only give us about 25 medals, so we tried to make sure Seniors got them. I will be ordering more medals for the entire team to receive one.
Anahita Sinha earned the Dean's List District Championship Semi-Finalist Award and here is the script read by the Master of Ceremonies.
The Dean's List District Championship Semi-Finalists are outstanding passionate student leaders who demonstrate exemplary effectiveness at attaining FIRST ideals. They were nominated by their teams for their direct contributions and impact on others – exemplifying leadership and commitment, on the team and in their community. FIRST Dean’s List District Championship Semi-Finalist(s), recognized here today, will move forward to compete at the District Championship. Today we would like the following student to come down to be recognized, Anahita Sinha.
Congratulations Team 245!
Food Thank You
A big thank you goes to the parents who helped make sure we had food and snacks at the competition: Mrs. Nahass, Mrs. Seely, and Mrs. Westness. It was really great to have dinner on Friday, due to the late start, and a nice lunch on Saturday.
Volunteers
There were four adult volunteers at the event from our team and one student. We are required to provide two, so again we overachieved. We also had a few other students who filled in when people needed a break.
Bus Transportation - The Good and the Bad
Several students advocated to the school administration for us to get a bus on Saturday, due to our large team size. They were successful. Mrs. Mukherjee did all the paperwork and communications to make it happen, which is no easy task. It worked out great in the morning. However, Saturday night the bus had a battery issue and needed a jump-start, and that took time to get it completed. After a very long day, Mrs. Mukherjee stayed behind with the students for the extra hour it took to get the problem resolved. Here is her note to the team:
Congratulations on winning the Engineering Inspiration Award! This prestigious honor reflects your hard work, dedication, and passion for innovation in engineering. Your efforts continue to inspire those around you, and this achievement is well deserved.
We now have 32 points towards the Michigan State Championship. History tells us it usually takes about 60-65 points to earn a spot, so we are half-way there.
Helping another team at Kettering
We were notified that rookie team, 10667 from Genessee High School, needed help and boy did they need it. Mr. Sochanski and Kat P. spent almost three hours helping them wire the robot, including the battery cables, control board installation. Namish K., and others, helped with the mechanical side much of Friday morning. I helped them with the bumpers. They appreciated all we did to help them. Team Rush, FRC Team 27, and some other teams, also helped them and two other rookie teams. It is great to see veteran teams helping new teams.

Good Day Everyone!
We hope you have a good holiday break! We are reaching out to let you all know of some great news for our students. Starting January 6th, families will no longer be required to make appointments to have their Chromebook replaced! Everything can now be done in school, using our ticketing system, Incident IQ.
Why are we changing this process?
What will the new process look like?
How will this new process help families & students receive the best support?
FAQ
What will be happening to our appointment site?
Can appointments still be made to come to the Admin Building?
Will this process also work for students who need to purchase replacement chargers?
Yes! Your TA knows that students who need to purchase a replacement charger would require them to follow this workflow.
Please note that this process is brand new for everyone, so there will be some growing pains. If you or your building staff notice anything that may need to be tweaked or if you have any questions, please reach out to myself or Lynn ([email protected])
We hope you have a good holiday break! We are reaching out to let you all know of some great news for our students. Starting January 6th, families will no longer be required to make appointments to have their Chromebook replaced! Everything can now be done in school, using our ticketing system, Incident IQ.
Why are we changing this process?
- Our current process requires all families to come to the Administration Building to swap their Chromebook out for a replacement device.
- This creates long delays for students to complete schoolwork at home
- Families need to make special arrangements to come to the Administration Building, usually resulting in them taking off work.
- Ongoing construction in front of the Administration Building causes confusion & frustration for families trying to get to their appointments
What will the new process look like?
- The student will bring their Chromebook to the Media Center for the TA to inspect for damage
- TA will determine if payment is needed to replace device
- In certain cases, an Elementary TA will swap the device at the building if no payment is needed.
- If payment is needed, an Incident IQ ticket will be created
- TA sends Chromebook to Help Desk @ Admin DQ
- Help Desk assess damage and contacts parent/guardian of damage and cost to replace
- Card Payment Preferred but cash or check option is available
- Once payment is made, Help Desk will send a replacement device to your buildings TA
- TA will receive the device and deliver the device to student/teacher
How will this new process help families & students receive the best support?
- Families will no longer have to make arrangements to come to the Administration Building
- Turnaround time will be faster for students.
FAQ
What will be happening to our appointment site?
- The appointment site will not be going away, I will be working with the site manager to update the site to now have a page to let them know of the new way to get their student’s device repaired.
Can appointments still be made to come to the Admin Building?
- Yes! Appointments will still be available on the same days of the week at the same times. We understand that parents/guardians prefer to come in person, rather than have everything done through email/on the phone. We also understand that some parents/guardians may have availability in their schedule to take care of this faster than the new workflow.
