IMPORTANT!
CALL
THE ATTENDANCE LINE

If your child has an early dismissal please call the attendance line as early as possible in the day at 248-726-5310. This is an automated number that is checked continuously between 6:30am – 3:00pm.  Have your student pick up their pass in the morning, during passing time, or at lunch.  We do not deliver passes. However, we will deliver a pass if it is a last minute emergency.

Please feel free to utilize the PARENTVUE to report an absence (full day or partial day). Simply note in the COMMENT SECTION, the time of the early dismissal or late arrival.

If you do not call to report the early dismissal you will have to wait until one of our Safe-Ed Security interrupts the class to get the student which can take up to 15 minutes. Once the early dismissal is reported and the student has picked up their pass they are free to meet you in the pick-up loop.  You are not required to come into the building.

ALERT:
WATER FILLING STATIONS

Please be reminded that our main office does not provide water or cups unless it is an emergency.  Although, our drinking fountains are all turned off throughout the building, we do have several functioning water filling stations available for your students to get water from.  They need to bring a water bottle to school with them each day or a small six pack of bottled water each week. Remember, water is available for purchase during lunch periods in the school store and the vending machines.

SPOTLIGHT ON INSTRUCTION
Special Guest Teacher: MRS. LISA NEWMAN

Mrs. Newman’s 9th grade Physical Science students were using spring scales and balloon rockets to learn about Newton’s Third Law of Motion.  Students used spring scales to gain an understanding of how the action and reaction forces behave during different scenarios, discovering they are always equal.  The balloon rockets allowed students to calculate velocity and acceleration while observing the role Newton’s Laws play in making the balloon move.  This hands on activity provided the classes with an opportunity to gain a better understanding of what is meant by every action has an equal and opposite reaction while having a little fun.

NOTES FROM KIM KELLY - PTSA President

Hello Highlanders (and future Highlanders)!

As we get ready for spring break we have a few items that the PTSA will be addressing when we return. We are looking for parents to chair and co-chair the Teacher Appreciation Committee. This is a great opportunity to provide fun events for our staff and meet other parents. We also have some PTSA Board vacancies as well as other committee co-chair opportunities next year. Please contact Kate Bass at kbrennan8@gmail.com for more information.
Does your student need service hours? We are looking to assemble backpacks with canned food, socks and toiletries for the homeless in Detroit and need students to lead the project. If interested, please contact Kim Kelly at kimedkat@live.com.
Do you have old board games taking up space in your closet? The Green Schools Committee is collecting gently used games in order to re-purpose them in the cafeteria and student spaces. A collection bin is located in the main office and collection will begin when we return from break.
I wish everyone a safe and healthy Spring Break and hope everyone enjoys a well-earned rest as we gear up for the last months of the school year!

Kim Kelly

GSA (Gender and Sexuality Alliance)

March 31st is the International Transgender Day of Visibility. This important date raises awareness of transgender peoples and the discrimination they face worldwide. Transgender members of society are over four times more likely than their cisgender counterparts to experience assault, violent or victimization. Even worse, in 2021 alone, over sixty transgender peoples in the United States were murdered purely for their gender identity. Each day, organizations around the world including HRC, GLSEN, and even our GSA, are continuing the fight for LGBTQ+ equality and safe spaces for LGBTQ+ students in our schools and communities.
