SPOTLIGHT ON INSTRUCTION
Special Guest Teacher: Mrs. Lisa Newman
Mrs. Newman’s Physical Science students became part of a team of engineers that were asked to submit a new thrilling roller coaster design for a local amusement park. Students needed to use the science concepts they had been learning about all semester when they designed, built, and tested their rollercoaster. Once they finalized their design the teams created a promotional video. In the video, students explained the science behind their roller coaster, identified the thrill factors, and included a pitch as to why the amusement park should choose their design.
SEMESTER 2 EXAMS
As with Semester 1 Exams, and with continued consideration by our district Curriculum team and feedback from our stakeholder groups, which included students, staff and parents, we have made the decision that there will be NO final exams for students to end semester 2. The schedule for June 8, 9, &10 will stay the same.
If your child has an early dismissal please call the attendance line as early as possible in the day at 248-726-5310. This is an automated number that is checked continuously between 6:30am – 3:00pm. Have your student pick up their pass in the morning, during passing time, or at lunch. We do not deliver passes. However, we will deliver a pass if it is a last minute emergency.
Please feel free to utilize the PARENTVUE to report an absence (full day or partial day). Simply note in the COMMENT SECTION, the time of the early dismissal or late arrival.
If you do not call to report the early dismissal you will have to wait until one of our Safe-Ed Security interrupts the class to get the student which can take up to 15 minutes. Once the early dismissal is reported and the student has picked up their pass they are free to meet you in the pick-up loop. You are not required to come into the building.

ASIAN AMERICAN AND PACIFIC ISLANDER MONTH
Since 1990, the U.S. government has designated the month of May as Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, celebrating the achievements and contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) in the United States. The month of May was chosen to mark the arrival of the first Japanese immigrant to the United States on May 7, 1843, as well as the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. This Teacher’s Guide offers a collection of lessons and resources for K-12 social studies, literature, and arts classrooms that center around the experiences, achievements, and perspectives of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders across U.S. history. NEWS FROM THE COUNSELING OFFICE
The AHS Counselors are wishing everyone a safe and healthy summer!! We look forward to seeing you in the fall!!
ATTENTION JUNIOR PARENTS - IMPORTANT COLLEGE INFORMATION
Counselors met with all juniors this week to discuss the college application process. Students were given a College Tip Sheet (linked HERE) with information regarding the process.
Information and suggestions for summer:
· Clean up social media accounts and make sure your email address is appropriate. Create a new account, if needed.
· Clean up your work space and room at home, so you are organized for the college application process.
· Get a job and save some money.
· Develop a plan for keeping all your online college and scholarship account logins and passwords organized and accessible.
· Research colleges, talk with people, join mailing lists, etc. to keep building your list.
· Make time for college visits/tours/open houses.
· Many colleges are “test optional” for admissions, meaning they do not require an SAT or ACT score. However, if you want or need to send a score, take an ACT or SAT. If you missed the spring tests, you could sign up for an early fall test now and study over the summer. If you have a score you’re ready to send, you send it via www.collegeboard.org or www.act.org .
· Most applications open August 1st, so you may begin working on them. It’s especially wise to begin drafting your college essays (if you have them) over the summer if possible! This can save you time in the fall.
· Transcripts will not be available for college applications until mid-September, after you’ve had a chance to review your transcript and hear more details about the process from counselors.
· Create a www.parchment.com account so you are ready to send transcripts in the fall.
· Look up your AP scores in July, and then explore the potential credit awarded at your college of interest.
If you need to reach out to your student’s counselor, please see below for contact information.
